We continue to show you more short cuts and tricks
than you can use, and that will facilitate the
use of your computer.
Drag & Drop Web Pics
Want a faster way to save copies of pictures you
come across on the Internet? Instead of
right clicking, selecting Save Picture As from
the menu, finding the folder you want to save
it in, so on and so on, just drag and drop it!
You can do that if you want to snag a quick picture.
Click and hold the picture you want, keep your
mouse button down, and then drag it onto your
desktop. Of course, if your browser is maximized
you won’t see your desktop so you’ll
need to make your browser window slightly smaller
to see at least a portion of your desktop.
Take Note: if you drag and drop a photo that's
linked to a web page, you'll end up with a shortcut
to that link instead of a picture on your desktop.
Cool Scraping
Did you know that you can save a "scrap"
of information on your desktop? You can use this
scrap and paste it into another application without
opening it. Now this may not work with everything,
but it works great with most popular programs
like MS Word, MS Paint, WordPad or other programs
that support OLE2 drag and drop.
This is how to do it:
Simply highlight the text you want to copy and
drag it to your desktop. No need to copy
paste, just highlight, drag and drop. You
have just created a document scrap and saved it
on the desktop. You can do this with text
or images. The scrap icon on your desktop
looks like this:
Then, when you are ready to add the scrap to a
document, simply drag and drop wherever you want
the text or image inserted. To use the same
scrap over and over again, right click the scrap
icon, and select Copy from the popup menu.
The text or image in that scrap is placed on the
clipboard where you can then Paste into your document.
Launch Multiple Programs
If you ever have a need to launch more than one
program, you don’t have to go through the
process of hitting the Start button, going to
Programs, and selecting the program you want only
to do it again to launch the next program. Here's
a better way.
From the Programs menu, hold down the SHIFT key
when selecting the program you want. The application
will launch and the Programs window stays open
so you don’t have to start all over.
The Windows Key
The Windows key can be used in conjunction with
other keys to act as a keyboard shortcut for faster
access to various Windows tools.
Windows key + R
will open the Start menu's Run box
Windows key + F will
open the Start menu's Find window
Windows key + E
will quickly launch Explorer
Windows key + Pause/Break
will open the System Properties window
Windows key + M
will Minimize all windows
Windows key + Shift +
M will undo Minimize all windows
Windows key + D
will switch between minimizing all open programs
and showing them all
Windows key + Tab
will cycle through items on the taskbar
Then, of course,
Windows key by
itself will open the Start menu
If you ever find yourself in a bind with your
mouse, you can also open programs, folders, or
shortcuts on your desktop by pressing the Windows
key + the first letter of the program/folder/or
shortcut + Enter.
